Reaching out to the community
Among our service areas are The Banquet, the Food to You Mobile Food Pantry, Church on the Street, Laundry with Love, our annual Neighborhood Pie & Ice Cream Social, our annual St. Lucia Festival, quilts completed at St. Mark's and given to local agencies, mission trips, and a variety of special projects.
St. Mark's reaches out to the community in many different ways.
Areas of Serving
-
Since 1976, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church has hosted the annual St. Lucia Festival. The story of Lucia, the symbol of light amid the darkness of winter in Sweden, has many different versions. Legend says that Lucia brought food to people who were dying of hunger during a famine. Today, it is one of the high points of the Christmas season and candles are lit all over Sweden to bear light against the darkness.
All are welcome for this free and meaningful event that celebrates the best things of Christmas: community, light, family, children, and good food.

St. Mark's Lutheran Church partners with other ELCA churches in Sioux Falls as Charis Ministry Partners to sponsor Food to You, a weekly mobile food pantry.
The purpose of Food to You is:
To provide a supplement to existing food assistance in the Sioux Falls area in order to decrease hunger and poverty through greater availability of food and household items.
To assist the public in building caring relationships with neighbors served through this program.
To express the Christian value of serving and working in respect and partnership with all parts of the community, both those served and those being served.

Observed annually in September, “God’s work. Our hands” Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America — one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor.
St. Mark's offers members and friends an opportunity to sign up for a variety of service opportunities.

St. Mark’s quilters provide a ministry of comfort and warmth by sewing and distributing quilts both locally and overseas. They meet every Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m. All are welcome to come and help.
